During her stay at the Coast, Gabriella will complete the edit of Darling Darling (working title), her new film installation. The two-part film, explores hierarchies of care, romanticism and the lingering colonial gaze upon the Australian landscape, specifically the devastation of Australia’s third largest waterway, the Baarka/Darling River.

Gabriella Hirst, Vigilance, 2018
Gabriella Hirst (b. 1990, Australia) is a cross-disciplinary artist based in London, working across video, performance, ceramics, sound and poetry. She is interested in the labor involved in the upkeep of illusions of permanence, within both domestic and institutional contexts, referencing gardening, art conservation and archive maintenance. She is continually inspired by cinematic tropes and romantic clichés. Gabriella recently completed an MFA at the Slade School of Fine Art. She is a current fellow at the Bomb Factory Studio Foundation in North London.

Darling Darling is commissioned by the Ian Potter Cultural Trust under the Ian Potter Moving Image Commission for exhibition by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image.
